Alex Your friend

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

A friend has had a difficult week at work. They turn to you, not for a quick fix, but to talk.

  1. Alex: I put so much into that project, and my manager barely acknowledged it. I'm starting to wonder why I bother.
Reply option 1: At least you still have a job. Managers never notice this stuff anyway.

Tangled

What you can improve This skips past how Alex feels and adds a new worry. Name the disappointment before offering perspective.

Reply option 2: That sounds really deflating after all that work. What were you hoping they'd notice?

Connected

What you did well You named the feeling and asked about what mattered to Alex. That invites them to keep talking.

Reply option 3: You should book a meeting and tell your manager everything you did.

Loose

What you can improve Practical, but it jumps to a fix. Advice lands better once Alex feels understood.

Sam Someone you just met

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

You're waiting for a community event to begin. The person next to you breaks the silence.

  1. Sam: Is this your first time here too? I nearly turned around at the door because I don't know anyone.
Reply option 1: Yes, first time.

Loose

What you can improve Honest, but it closes the door Sam opened. Add a detail or a question so they have something to answer.

Reply option 2: Honestly, I only came because my week has been awful. My landlord's selling, my car died, and work is a mess.

Tangled

What you can improve That's a lot to hand someone you just met, and it leaves Sam nowhere to go. Share something light and ask one question.

Reply option 3: Same here, I almost stayed home. Glad I'm not the only new face. What brought you?

Connected

What you did well You matched Sam's honesty with a bit of your own and gave them an easy question. That makes it mutual.

Jordan Your friend

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

You're helping a friend put together flat-pack furniture. The shelf is finally standing. Keep the humor kind.

  1. Jordan: Okay, the shelf is up. I have three screws left over. Should I be worried?
Reply option 1: Those are bonus screws. The shelf is just showing off.

Connected

What you did well You played with the situation without dismissing Jordan's worry. Short and shared, so you laugh together.

Reply option 2: Maybe check the manual again?

Loose

What you can improve Helpful, but Jordan left room for a joke. Play along for one line before fixing things.

Reply option 3: Worried? I've seen your cooking. This is your best work.

Tangled

What you can improve The joke lands on Jordan, not the situation. Tease the shelf, not your friend.

Taylor Your sister

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

Your sister is thinking about moving back to your hometown. She wants to talk it through.

  1. Taylor: Everyone keeps saying moving back would be easier. Cheaper rent, family nearby. I just don't know if it's what I want.
Reply option 1: Just do it. You'd save so much money.

Tangled

What you can improve You picked a side before understanding it. Taylor already knows the practical reasons.

Reply option 2: Big decisions are always hard.

Loose

What you can improve Kind, but general. Reflect something specific Taylor said so she knows you caught it.

Reply option 3: So it makes sense on paper, but you're not sure it's right for you. What's pulling you the other way?

Connected

What you did well You reflected the gap Taylor described and asked about the part she hasn't said yet.

Casey Your project partner

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

You and a project partner see a missed deadline differently. Find a way forward without assigning blame.

  1. Casey: I thought you were handling that part. Now we're both behind, and I'm frustrated that nobody told me anything.
Reply option 1: I get why you're frustrated. Sounds like we each thought the other had it, and I should have checked. Can we sort out who owns what today?

Connected

What you did well You acknowledged Casey's frustration, took your share of the mix-up without blame, and pointed to a next step.

Reply option 2: That's not fair. You never said it was mine.

Tangled

What you can improve Defending first raises the tension. Acknowledge how Casey feels before clarifying what happened.

Reply option 3: Sorry, it's all my fault. I'll fix everything tonight.

Loose

What you can improve Taking it all on may calm things now, but the real problem stays. Clarify ownership together.

Morgan A new friend

Tap a reply to see how it lands Tangled. The conversation snags here. Loose. It works, but it could land closer. Connected. This lands, and the conversation keeps going.

You're getting to know someone over coffee. Share a small story with a beginning, a turn, and a point.

  1. Morgan: What's something you tried recently that didn't go quite as planned? I feel like those make the best stories.
Reply option 1: I tried baking bread once. It was bad.

Loose

What you can improve A start, but there's no turn. Add one detail and what surprised you.

Reply option 2: Oh, so many things. There was the car, then work, then my cousin's wedding, and...

Tangled

What you can improve Listing several stories means none of them lands. Pick one and tell it from the start.

Reply option 3: Last month I tried sourdough. By day three the starter had climbed out of the jar and glued itself to the shelf. My roommate calls it the creature. I still bake, just with a bigger jar.

Connected

What you did well Clear setup, a vivid detail, a turn and a light point. Morgan gets a picture and something to reply to.

What does the line between you and the character mean?

It is a quick visual for how a reply might land in that moment: tangled, loose, or connected. It is not a grade of you. Coaching is advice about one reply in one situation, so use what helps and set aside what does not fit.
